As a North East wedding photographer, one of the things I love most about my job is that no two weddings are ever the same.

Every couple brings their own personality, their own story and their own atmosphere to the day, and Leanne and Sophie's wedding at Websters Ropery in Sunderland was a perfect example of that.

From the moment I arrived, the day felt relaxed. There was plenty of laughter, plenty of smiles and absolutely no pressure to be anything other than themselves. That's usually when the best wedding photographs happen.

As a documentary wedding photographer, I'm always looking for genuine moments rather than creating them, and throughout the day Leanne and Sophie gave me plenty of those.

As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, I’m lucky enough to work at some incredible wedding venues across the region, but Hackness Grange is a venue I always look forward to returning to. Nestled in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside just outside Scarborough, it offers everything I love as a documentary wedding photographer; stunning surroundings, a relaxed atmosphere and endless opportunities to create natural wedding photographs without ever making the day feel like a photoshoot.

Gary and Kelly’s wedding at Treebridge Hotel was definitely one of those weddings.

Loads of personality, loads of laughs, brilliant guests and honestly one of the most fun relaxed atmospheres you could ask for as a documentary wedding photographer And somehow… Cindy the horse completely stole the show.

Honestly, I don’t think couples always realise just how special that part of the wedding day can be until they actually see it.

The speeches are finished, everyone’s relaxed, the pressure of the ceremony has gone and the whole atmosphere of the wedding seems to shift into something completely different.

Then the light changes.

As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer photographing weddings across both North Yorkshire and the North East, golden hour is probably one of my favourite parts of any summer wedding day.

One of the things I’ve always loved most about wedding photography is that no two weddings ever feel the same.

Different people, different stories, different energy — and that’s exactly how it should be.

Over the years as a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to photograph weddings for all kinds of couples across North Yorkshire and the North East, including some absolutely incredible same-sex weddings filled with so much emotion, personality and atmosphere.

And honestly, that’s what weddings should always be about. Not tradition for the sake of tradition. Not ticking boxes because you feel like you have to.

You start off thinking fairly simply.

Find a venue. Book a photographer. Sort the dress. Easy enough.

Then suddenly you’re looking at flowers, registrars, suits, entertainment, table décor, invitations, accommodation, transport, food, evening food, favours… and before you know it you’re sitting there with about fifteen tabs open wondering how weddings somehow escalated so quickly.

Honestly, it happens to nearly everyone.

As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer covering weddings across both North Yorkshire and the North East, I speak to couples all the time who are trying to balance having an amazing day while still keeping things realistic financially.

And the truth is, weddings can cost as much or as little as you want them to.

Some wedding venues you visit once in a while, and others become places you know almost like a second home. For me, Rushpool Hall is definitely one of those venues.

Being based here in the North East, it’s one of the closest wedding venues to where I live, and over the years I’ve had the privilege of photographing many weddings there. Every time I drive up the long driveway and see the hall appear through the trees, it still feels special.

When couples first get in touch with me about their wedding photography, one of the most common things they say is that they don’t want their day to feel like a photoshoot.

They don’t want to spend hours standing in awkward poses or constantly being told where to stand and how to smile. What they really want is to enjoy their wedding day, spend time with the people they love, and trust that the important moments are being captured naturally.

Some wedding days just feel right from the moment you arrive, and Nichola and James’s wedding at Rushpool Hall was one of those. Calm, emotional, full of warmth, and completely centred around the people who matter most to them — exactly the kind of day Rushpool Hall does so well.

As a Rushpool Hall wedding photographer, I’ve worked at this venue many times over the years, and it never loses its charm. It’s elegant without being stiff, relaxed without losing its sense of occasion, and it creates an atmosphere where couples and guests alike can genuinely settle into the day.

Some wedding venues just have something about them the moment you walk in. Dalton Old Pump House is one of those places. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t try too hard. It simply feels warm, intimate, and full of character — the kind of venue where real moments naturally happen.

As a wedding photographer in North Yorkshire and the North East, I’ve worked at a lot of venues over the years, and Dalton Old Pump House really stands out for how personal it feels. From the layout to the atmosphere, it’s a venue that encourages connection, emotion, and a genuinely relaxed wedding day.

One of the most common things couples tell me when they first get in touch is, “We’re not very comfortable in front of the camera.” And honestly? That’s completely normal.

Most people don’t spend their lives being photographed, and the idea of having a camera pointed at you all day can feel daunting. Add wedding-day nerves into the mix and it’s easy to worry about looking awkward, stiff, or not quite like yourselves. But this is exactly why feeling comfortable with your photographer is so important — and why I place such a big emphasis on helping couples relax long before the wedding day arrives.

One of the questions I get asked most as a wedding photographer in North Yorkshire and the North East is about timing. Not lenses or cameras — timing. Couples worry about fitting everything in, missing moments, or feeling rushed on a day they’ve waited months (or years) for.

The truth is, a good wedding photography timeline isn’t about squeezing every possible photo into the day. It’s about creating enough space for moments to happen naturally. When a timeline works well, the day feels relaxed, guests aren’t standing around waiting, and couples actually get to enjoy their wedding rather than feeling like they’re being pulled from one thing to the next.

After photographing weddings for many years across venues like Rushpool Hall, Danby Castle Barn, Gisborough Hall, Acklam Hall and Scarborough Spa, I’ve seen first-hand what works — and what causes unnecessary stress.

Not every wedding needs a crowd.
Not every wedding needs a big venue.

Some weddings are simply about love — and Ben & Simone’s Middlesbrough Registry Office wedding was exactly that.

With just a small number of guests present — their children — this was one of the most heartfelt, meaningful ceremonies I’ve had the privilege to photograph. Proof that the smallest weddings often carry the biggest emotions.

When you think about your wedding photographs, your mind probably goes to the “big” moments — walking down the aisle, the first kiss, the confetti, the first dance.
And yes, those moments are beautiful and powerful, and they deserve to be photographed with care.

But after photographing weddings for so many years, I’ve learned something simple and deeply true:

The real story of your wedding day lives in the small moments.
