There’s Something About Golden Hour At Summer Weddings…

Honestly, I don’t think couples always realise just how special that part of the wedding day can be until they actually see it.

The speeches are finished, everyone’s relaxed, the pressure of the ceremony has gone and the whole atmosphere of the wedding seems to shift into something completely different.

Then the light changes.

As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer photographing weddings across both North Yorkshire and the North East, golden hour is probably one of my favourite parts of any summer wedding day.

Not because everything suddenly becomes “perfect”, but because everything feels calmer, softer and more natural.

And honestly… the photographs during that time just hit differently.

One thing I always say to couples is to try and make ten or fifteen minutes for a few photographs once golden hour arrives.

Not disappearing for ages. Not turning the evening into a photoshoot. Just taking a few quiet minutes together while the light is at its best.

And weirdly, it’s often one of the only moments all day where couples actually stop and breathe for a second.

The wedding day moves so fast that those little moments away from the noise and chaos become really important without people even realising it at the time.

As a North East and North Yorkshire wedding photographer, those are often the photographs couples end up connecting with most afterwards as well.

Not because they’re heavily posed, but because there’s usually a real sense of calm and emotion to them.

Summer weddings across North Yorkshire and the North East create such an amazing atmosphere anyway.

Guests outside with drinks, kids running around in the evening sunshine, people chatting in gardens while music drifts outside from the venue — everything just feels more relaxed during summer weddings.

That atmosphere naturally carries through into the photographs too.

Venues like Scarborough Spa, Grinkle Park, Rushpool Hall and countryside barn venues across Yorkshire all look completely different once that softer evening light arrives.

The colours warm up, the sky softens and suddenly even the quietest little corners of a venue start looking incredible.

I think one of the reasons golden hour photographs work so well is because couples are usually much more relaxed by that point in the day.

During the morning there’s nerves, timings and anticipation. Around the ceremony there’s a lot of emotion and adrenaline.

But later in the evening, once everyone settles into the celebrations properly, couples naturally loosen up and stop overthinking things.

That’s usually when the most genuine photographs happen anyway.

As a documentary wedding photographer in North Yorkshire, that’s always what I’m drawn towards more than stiff posing or over-directing.

Real moments always matter more.

And honestly, the British weather makes golden hour even better sometimes.

People always think photographers want blazing sunshine all day, but some of the best wedding photographs actually happen when there’s softer skies, dramatic clouds or that warm light breaking through later in the evening.

Especially along the Yorkshire coast.

Places around Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough can look unbelievable during summer evenings, and that natural light creates such an amazing backdrop for relaxed wedding photography.

One thing I’ve definitely noticed over the years is that couples who make time for those extra evening photographs never regret it afterwards.

Even if it’s literally just ten minutes.

The dance floor will still be there when you get back. Your guests will still be enjoying themselves. But those few minutes together during golden hour often create some of the most personal photographs of the entire wedding day.

And usually, they don’t even feel like photographs.

They just feel like a couple enjoying a quiet moment together while everything else carries on around them.

After photographing weddings for more than 17 years across North Yorkshire and the North East, one thing I’ve realised is that atmosphere matters just as much as anything else when it comes to wedding photography.

And summer golden hour creates atmosphere naturally without needing to force anything.

That’s why I’ll always gently suggest slipping outside for a few extra shots when the light starts changing later in the evening.

Because honestly… it’s always worth it.

If you’re planning a summer wedding somewhere across North Yorkshire or the North East and you’re looking for relaxed, natural wedding photography that focuses on real moments and atmosphere rather than awkward posing, then that’s exactly how I approach weddings.
