From the Archives | Why I Still Love This Wedding Photograph from Rushpool Hall

Every now and again, I'll be editing a wedding or updating my website and find myself disappearing down memory lane.

I'll stumble across an old photograph and instantly remember the moment it was taken.

This image from Graham and Heather's wedding at Rushpool Hall is one of those photographs.

It's funny because, on paper, it's just a groom singing into a microphone during the evening reception. But to me, it's so much more than that.

I can still remember the atmosphere in the room.

Graham has always been a massive Elvis fan, so when an Elvis tribute act appeared during the evening celebrations, everyone knew what was coming. Sure enough, before long he'd grabbed the microphone and was up there singing like he'd been waiting his whole life for that moment.

It wasn't planned. Nobody asked him to do it. He simply couldn't resist.

Heather was stood watching with the biggest smile on her face, their family and friends were laughing, singing along and cheering him on, and for a few minutes nobody was thinking about cameras or photographs. They were simply enjoying themselves.

That's exactly why I love this image.

As a Rushpool Hall wedding photographer, I could spend all day talking about the beautiful grounds, the elegant rooms and the stunning backdrops the venue offers, and they really are incredible. But when I look back through weddings years later, it isn't always the sunset portraits or perfectly posed photographs that jump out at me.

It's photographs like this. The ones that instantly remind you what that couple were really like.

This image tells you everything you need to know about Graham. You can almost hear the music playing and imagine everyone in the room laughing along with him. That's what makes it so special.

It's also one of the reasons I love documentary wedding photography so much.

Real moments will always beat staged ones.

You simply can't recreate something like this. If I'd asked Graham to pose with a microphone afterwards, it wouldn't have meant anything. The reason this photograph works is because it's completely genuine. It happened naturally, and all I had to do was be there, camera ready, waiting for the moment to unfold.

Over the years I've photographed many weddings at Rushpool Hall, and every single one has been different. Every couple brings their own personalities, their own traditions and their own stories. That's what keeps wedding photography exciting, even after all these years.

Looking back at this photograph still makes me smile because I remember exactly how much fun everyone was having. It's a reminder that weddings aren't about perfection. They're about celebrating the people you love, making memories and occasionally grabbing a microphone to sing Elvis in front of everyone!

If you're planning your own wedding at Rushpool Hall and you're looking for a Rushpool Hall wedding photographer who'll capture the real moments as they happen, I'd love to hear about your plans. Years from now, I want you to look back through your photographs and remember exactly how your wedding day felt... just like this image reminds me of Graham and Heather's.
