Love Is Love – Photographing Same-Sex Weddings Across Yorkshire & The North East

Real Love, Real Moments & Weddings That Feel Completely You

One of the things I’ve always loved most about wedding photography is that no two weddings ever feel the same.

Different people, different stories, different energy — and that’s exactly how it should be.

Over the years as a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to photograph weddings for all kinds of couples across North Yorkshire and the North East, including some absolutely incredible same-sex weddings filled with so much emotion, personality and atmosphere.

And honestly, that’s what weddings should always be about. Not tradition for the sake of tradition. Not ticking boxes because you feel like you have to.

Just two people celebrating their relationship in a way that genuinely feels right for them.

There’s something really special about photographing weddings where couples completely relax into being themselves.

That’s usually when the best moments happen.

The laughter during the morning preparations, the emotional reactions during the ceremony, the hugs from friends and family afterwards, and the absolute chaos once the dance floor gets going later in the evening — those are the moments that matter most.

As a North East and North Yorkshire wedding photographer, those are always the things I’m looking for more than anything else.

Not overly posed photographs.

Not forced smiles.

Just real moments and real emotion.

I think one of the reasons documentary wedding photography works so well for same-sex weddings is because every wedding naturally finds its own rhythm.

There’s no expectation for things to follow a “traditional” structure if that’s not what feels right for the couple.

Some weddings are huge celebrations with packed dance floors and loads of guests, while others are much more intimate and relaxed with only close friends and family there.

And honestly, both are equally amazing to photograph.

That’s the beauty of weddings now — couples are creating days that actually reflect who they are instead of feeling pressured into following a certain formula.

Across North Yorkshire and the North East, there are some incredible venues for same-sex weddings as well.

Places like Grinkle Park, Danby Castle Barn and coastal venues around Whitby and Saltburn all create completely different atmospheres depending on the kind of wedding day couples want.

Some couples go full countryside wedding with outdoor ceremonies and relaxed barn receptions, while others prefer elegant manor houses or more modern celebrations.

The best part is there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

One thing I always try to create as a North Yorkshire wedding photographer is an environment where couples can fully relax and just enjoy the day without feeling awkward in front of the camera.

Most people say before the wedding that they hate being photographed.

Honestly, nearly everyone says that.

That’s why I keep things calm, natural and unobtrusive throughout the day. I quietly blend into the background and capture things as they naturally happen instead of constantly directing people or turning the wedding into a photoshoot.

Usually the less people think about the camera, the better the photographs become.

After photographing weddings for more than 17 years, one thing I’ve realised is that the weddings people remember most are never about perfection.

It’s always about the feeling of the day. The atmosphere. The people who were there. The moments that happened naturally without anyone planning them.

That’s what wedding photography should really be about.

Capturing something real enough that years later you can still feel what the day was like when you look back through the photographs.

If you’re planning a same-sex wedding somewhere across North Yorkshire or the North East and you’re looking for photography that feels relaxed, natural and genuinely focused on real moments rather than awkward posing, then that’s exactly how I approach weddings.
