Why I Still Love This Wedding Photograph | Blackthorn Gate Wedding Photography
As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, there are certain images that stay with you long after the wedding day itself has finished. Not because they were massively planned or took hours to create, but because everything naturally came together at exactly the right moment.
This photograph from Darren and Finuala’s wedding at Blackthorn Gate Lodge is honestly still one of my favourite wedding photographs years later.
Every time I look at it, it reminds me why I love relaxed documentary wedding photography so much.
One thing I’ve learned after photographing weddings across North Yorkshire and the North East for over 17 years is that relaxed couples nearly always create the best photographs. Darren and Finuala’s wedding had that atmosphere from the minute I arrived. Nobody was stressing, nobody was overthinking anything and everybody was just genuinely enjoying being together.
The bridesmaids and groomsmen honestly made this image what it is. Everybody was relaxed, laughing and completely comfortable around each other and that natural atmosphere changes everything in wedding photography. You simply can’t fake that kind of energy or connection between people.
Finuala especially was incredibly relaxed throughout the entire wedding day and I honestly think that’s one of the reasons this photograph works so well. Nothing feels forced or overly posed. It just feels natural and real which is always what I’m looking for when photographing weddings.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I never want weddings to feel like one long photoshoot. I’d much rather quietly capture genuine moments while people are properly enjoying one of the biggest days of their lives. That’s exactly what happened here.
And then you’ve got Roseberry Topping sitting perfectly in the background which honestly finished the image off beautifully. One of the best things about photographing weddings across North Yorkshire is having scenery like this right on your doorstep. The countryside, the warm tones in the field, the hay bales, the relaxed wedding party and Roseberry Topping all came together naturally to create an image that feels incredibly Yorkshire to me.
That’s probably one of the reasons I still love this image so much all these years later. It captures far more than just a couple stood for a photograph. It captures the atmosphere of the wedding day, the personalities of the people in it and the location itself all in one frame.
Blackthorn Gate Lodge is such a brilliant venue for relaxed wedding photography because you’re surrounded by open countryside and incredible scenery. Locations like this give couples space to breathe and actually enjoy the moment without everything feeling overly formal or staged.
Honestly, this photograph pretty much sums up my whole approach to wedding photography. Real moments, genuine emotion and natural storytelling without stiff posing or forcing moments that don’t feel real.
Years later, couples rarely remember the posed photographs the most. They remember the atmosphere, the laughs, the people around them and how the wedding day actually felt. For me, this image of Darren and Finuala’s wedding captures exactly that.
Sometimes the best wedding photographs aren’t complicated at all.
Sometimes the image simply makes itself.
