Matt & Jo's Mallyan Spout Hotel Wedding | A Relaxed North Yorkshire Moors Wedding Full of Personality

There's something incredibly special about weddings that completely reflect the couple, and Matt and Jo's wedding at the Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland was exactly that. It wasn't about following traditions for the sake of it. Instead, it was about celebrating who they are, surrounded by the people they love, in one of the most beautiful corners of the North York Moors National Park.

As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, these are the kinds of weddings I absolutely love to photograph. Every part of the day felt authentic, relaxed and filled with laughter, which is exactly what documentary wedding photography is all about.

From the moment I arrived at the Mallyan Spout Hotel, it was clear this wasn't going to be an ordinary wedding. Jo looked incredible in a stunning vintage-inspired dress that suited both her personality and the surroundings perfectly, while Matt's tweed suit complemented the whole look beautifully. Together they looked completely at home against the backdrop of the North York Moors.

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at the Mallyan Spout Hotel is just how much character surrounds it. Sitting in the heart of Goathland, every corner seems to offer another opportunity for photographs that feel natural rather than staged. We didn't need to travel far because the village itself became part of their story.

One of my favourite moments came when we wandered through the famous kissing gate outside the hotel. If you've ever walked through a kissing gate with your partner, you'll know the unwritten rule—you simply have to stop for a kiss. Matt and Jo happily obliged, and it made for one of those photographs that feels completely effortless. Nothing forced. Just two people enjoying a quiet moment together.

Of course, being in Goathland meant we couldn't ignore the incredible surroundings. We made our way into the village where an old police car, instantly recognisable to many visitors, provided a wonderfully quirky backdrop that perfectly matched the vintage feel of the day. It was one of those unexpected little additions that made the gallery even more personal.

For me though, one of the highlights of the afternoon was visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. A huge thank you has to go to everyone at the NYMR for allowing us to photograph around the station. As someone who photographs weddings throughout North Yorkshire, opportunities like this are always hugely appreciated.

Goathland Station is iconic, and it added another layer to Matt and Jo's story. Walking hand in hand along the platform with the heritage trains behind them, sharing a quiet kiss inside the old waiting room and standing together on the footbridge overlooking the railway all felt timeless. They weren't simply posing for photographs; they were soaking up every minute of their wedding day together, and that's exactly what I want couples to remember when they look back through their gallery years from now.

Throughout the day, Matt and Jo laughed constantly. They were relaxed with each other, comfortable in front of the camera and never once felt like they were performing for photographs. That's something I always encourage. The best images come when couples simply enjoy their wedding day rather than worrying about the camera.

It's one of the reasons I take such a documentary approach to wedding photography. Rather than interrupting the day, I prefer to quietly capture the genuine interactions, the smiles, the conversations and the little moments that often become the most treasured photographs of all.

The Mallyan Spout Hotel continues to be one of my favourite wedding venues in North Yorkshire. Its location on the edge of the moors, combined with the character of Goathland and the nearby North Yorkshire Moors Railway, gives couples an incredible variety of backdrops without ever feeling rushed or having to travel far from their guests. Whether it's wandering through the village streets, exploring the station, or simply enjoying the gardens around the hotel, there's always another beautiful scene waiting just around the corner.

Looking back through Matt and Jo's gallery, what I remember most isn't just the locations or the photographs. It's the laughter. The way they looked at each other. The way they completely embraced being themselves. Every wedding tells its own story, and theirs was full of personality from beginning to end.

It's weddings like this that remind me why I love what I do.

If you're planning your own Mallyan Spout Hotel wedding, a celebration in Goathland, or anywhere across the North York Moors, I'd love to hear all about your plans. My approach is relaxed, natural and completely centred around telling your story, allowing you to enjoy every moment while I quietly capture the memories that will last a lifetime.
