There’s something wonderfully honest about a registry office wedding. Without the grandeur of a country house or the sweeping views of a castle, everything comes back to what a wedding is really about. Two people making a promise to one another, surrounded by the people who mean the most to them.
That was exactly the feeling throughout Andrea and Ste's wedding at Middlesbrough Town Hall Registry Office.
From the moment everyone arrived, there was a lovely sense of excitement in the air. Guests gathered outside chatting amongst themselves while Andrea made her final preparations before walking into the ceremony room. It never ceases to amaze me how every wedding, no matter how large or small, has its own personality. Some are loud and energetic, others are quiet and emotional, while many, like Andrea and Ste's, simply feel relaxed from beginning to end.
As a documentary wedding photographer in Middlesbrough, those are the weddings I love photographing. Rather than trying to direct every moment, I simply let the day unfold naturally, quietly capturing everything as it happens. Real smiles will always mean more than posed ones, and genuine emotion never needs to be manufactured.
The ceremony itself was intimate, heartfelt and full of smiles. Watching Andrea and Ste exchange their vows, you could see exactly why they were standing there together. There was no need for grand gestures or over-the-top displays of emotion because everything about the day felt authentic. Sometimes it's the simplest moments that leave the biggest impression.
Once the legal formalities were complete and the rings had been exchanged, everyone made their way outside Middlesbrough Town Hall for congratulations and photographs. One of the things I enjoy most about photographing weddings here is the beautiful architecture surrounding the building. The impressive stonework and grand entrance create a timeless backdrop that works perfectly for relaxed couple portraits without ever overpowering the people in front of the camera.
Andrea and Ste slipped away with me for a few minutes while their guests enjoyed chatting outside. We didn't spend ages posing or walking miles away from everyone else. Instead, we simply took advantage of the beautiful surroundings, had a laugh together and created some natural photographs that reflected who they are as a couple. Those little moments away from the crowd often become a chance for newlyweds to pause for the first time all day and simply enjoy being married.
Back inside, there was another detail that immediately caught my eye.
The wedding cake.
I'm fairly certain I wasn't the only person wondering what it tasted like because it looked absolutely incredible. Beautifully decorated with delicate flowers and elegant detailing, it almost seemed too nice to cut into. I say almost, because wedding cake is definitely there to be enjoyed!
One of my favourite little touches from the day, however, wasn't something expensive or extravagant at all. Sitting quietly alongside the celebrations were Polar Bear and Ted, two little companions who apparently travel everywhere with Andrea and Ste. Naturally, they weren't going to miss the biggest adventure of them all. It's personal details like these that make every wedding unique. Long after the flowers have faded and the decorations have been packed away, those tiny touches are often what make people smile years later when they look back through their photographs.
As the evening celebrations got underway, the dance floor soon filled with family and friends enjoying every moment together. The first dance marked the beginning of the evening party, with everyone gathering around to watch before joining in themselves. Those are the moments that documentary wedding photography is all about. Nobody is thinking about the camera anymore. They're simply enjoying themselves, and that's exactly when the best photographs happen.
After photographing weddings for nearly two decades, I still find myself drawn to the little moments that happen between the obvious ones. The glance across a room. The laughter that catches everyone by surprise. The proud smiles from parents watching quietly from the side. Those moments often pass in a heartbeat, but they become some of the most treasured photographs in a wedding gallery because they're completely genuine.

It simply needs to reflect the two of you.
