I think work experience is very important, it’s a step into real working life for near school leavers. I always treat whoever comes to me as a member of staff and although they may not be able to fulfil some job roles. Always treating them equally. I also make sure we cover something they are interested in. There is no way any student should go to a placement and be bored for the whole week.
However contrary to belief, a photographer isn’t taking picture s 24/7. A photography business or any business for that matter has so much more to the day to day running. Emma was interested in people. So I made time to arrange to fulfil her interests people in some way possible.
A trip to the fair town of Redcar was arranged for some street photography. We endured the freezing cold wind and I even treat her to a Costa (well a coke), who doesn’t drink hot drinks??!!
Of course it gave me chance to chill out a little too, with camera in hand.
I have set up a work experience program, which gives students a written diary to complete job to job, with my comments on the bottom. This gives them something to return school or college with proving their experience.
